Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery is a set of surgical procedures aimed at reshaping the auricle. It is applied to change the size, shape or position of the ears.

Genetic factors, excessive elongation of the ear angles or flattening of the ear folds cause people to have this surgery. The proportion and balance between the face and the ear may be impaired. The ear can be opened towards the sides and gain a structure called ‘prominent ears’. Ear surgery saves patients from these situations and gives them the look they dream of. Thus, it prevents social adaptation problems and psychological problems caused by this appearance.

It is recommended that ear surgeries are performed at a young age. 5-7 years old is considered ideal for this surgical procedure. In this period, the cartilage of children is soft and it is easier to shape the ear. Recovery time is shorter compared to ear surgeries performed in advanced ages.

What are the Steps for an Ear Surgery?

This surgery, which is performed under general or local anaesthesia, is performed by making a small incision behind the ear. Then the incision is sutured and the operation is completed. The incision may leave a scar, but it remains behind the ear. Therefore, it does not cause any disturbance.

Bruising, redness or swelling may be seen. The listed complications are natural and usually disappear within a few days. The patient is asked to wear a bandage during the first week after surgery.

Those who have an ear surgery can usually return to work within 2-7 days. However, sudden movements should be avoided and, if possible, 7 days should be rested. Full recovery will take about 6-8 weeks.

There may be mild pain, tingling or numbness around the ear. These are also temporary. There is also a risk of asymmetrical appearance, bleeding or infection. Therefore, the post-op checks should not neglected. Especially for 3 months, the ear should be protected from possible impacts and traumas.

Ear Surgery

Ear surgery covers different deformities. One of them is the prominent ear problem. The prominent ear deformity, which causes problems such as anxiety, social discomfort, and being a laughing stock in the society, is removed with this surgical procedure.

Some of skin is removed from behind the ear. Cartilage shaping is performed with the help of sutures. Other techniques can be used in line with the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s preferences. For example, weakening, piece removal, permanent sutures are considered among them. Surgical procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.

After the operation, the ear is closed with the help of a bandage. These are changed at regular intervals for 5 days, then removed. The patient will need to sleep by wearing a forehead band for the next 6 weeks.
