What is Rhinoplasty?

It is a common plastic surgery operation performed by making changes in the bone and cartilage structures of the nose. It is performed to eliminate deformities that develop due to trauma or congenital deformities in the nose.

Before the surgery, the patient’s nasal tissues are evaluated for aesthetic compatibility. Because the slightest intervention will lead to obvious results. A nose reshaping surgery shows its expected effect in a period of 6-12 months. The structure of the tissues in the nose, the severity of the problem and the size of the operation may also affect the duration of the recovery process.

What are the steps in a Rhinoplasty operation?

  1. It is determined whether the patient is eligible for an aesthetic operation.
  2. The patient and the doctor exchange ideas and discuss the expectations and possible outcomes.
  3. Rhinoplasty may not be preferred if the patient has haemophilia or a similar condition that may cause excessive bleeding.
  4. With the physical examination, the external and internal structures of the patient’s nose are examined and planned what kind of changes will be made. At this stage, biochemical laboratory tests and blood analyses are also used.
  5. Nasal photographs of the patient can also be taken in order to clarify the post-op expectations and to benefit from them during the operation.
  6. The patient should stop using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen at the latest 2 weeks before the operation. The patient should not use these drugs in the 2 weeks after the surgery. Otherwise, coagulation functions may be adversely affected and bleeding may increase. The surgeon will decide which drugs and supplements should be discontinued and when.
  7. Cigarette smoke also slows down the recovery time. It is very important to avoid smoking before and after the surgery.
  8. Rhinoplasty operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. However, simple rhinoplasty operations can be performed with local anaesthesia.

Types of Rhinoplasty

  • Open Rhinoplasty: A small incision is made across the narrow bridge of skin between the nostrils. This technique is advantageous as it offers a wide surgical field of view. However, more bruising and oedema occur after the operation, and it heals in a relatively longer period of time.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: During a closed rhinoplasty procedure, the incisions are hidden inside a patient’s nose. This procedure does not leave suture marks on the nose. Recovery time is shorter. It is preferred for the removal of small-sized deformities.
  • Non-surgical Rhinoplasty: It is known as filler or liquid rhinoplasty. In this method, dermal filler is applied to the bridge of the nose. It is a practical and reliable solution used in the treatment of problems such as nasal contour problem, low nasal tip, nasal congestion and wrinkled nose appearance.
